How Far Can You Walk In Heels?

By Dan Sowden

That is the question the women of Maroochydore and the Sunshine Coast generally are asking themselves, why? It has to do with the distance between the current Myer Centre at Sunshine Plaza and the proposed new David Jones Department store.

Now you may think this is an interesting way to describe an element of the newly released Maroochydore Strategic Town Plan, however Sunshine Coast Mayor Bob Abbott and (former) David Jones CEO Michael McInnes have conflicting views as to where they want the proposed 1500m2 retail development.  Across Australia, the front door distance between David Jones and Myer is never longer then 350m (when in same centre) and often less in major shopping precincts, which is said to be for shopper’s convenience. Accordingly, it is believed that David Jones has an agreement with Lend Lease that the 2 Brands will be no more than 220m apart.  Mayor Bob Abbot on the other hand is challenging this development and wants to create a new retail precinct on the site of the Horton Park Golf Course, some 520m away door to door.

Obviously mayor Bob Abbot doesn’t wear high heels. However, how far could you walk in heels? Either way the Women of the Sunshine Coast will soon be rejoicing with the anticipated arrival of David Jones and the additional 120 specialty shops.
