5 Key Economic Drivers for the Sunshine Coast

By Dan Sowden

There are a number of exciting developments currently in the pipeline for the Sunshine Coast, with the scope to strengthen and build the Sunshine Coast community. Here are our top 5 key economic drivers that will give confidence for further local investment and growth.

1. Sunshine Plaza $350m Upgrade

The Sunshine Coast Regional Council has recently approved a proposal for a $350 million expansion of the Sunshine Plaza. As the largest shopping precinct of its kind in the area, this community stalwart is well positioned to capitalise on this further expansion.

The proposed plan includes introducing retailing giant, David Jones into a two storey site. On top of this there will be a further 1500 car spaces, 120 more speciality retail and restaurant spaces and an expansion of the Myer department store.

The expansion is expected to create not only a new high class retail experience for the region, but a much needed economic injection. To find out more click here

2. Maroochydore CBD Development

The proposed Maroochydore CBD is set to occupy the current grounds of the Horton Park Golf Course in Central Maroochydore. The concept behind this overhaul is to create a vibrant mix of commercial, retail and multi residential precincts mixed with the iconic existing waterways and park lands. This will project a new metropolitan style of living for the heart of the Sunshine Coast.

There has been early local, national and international interest in the varied retail precincts, cafes and entertainment venues pegged for production. Residentially a further 4000 dwellings will be created and as much as 40% of the current golf course will be kept as ‘open space’ and parklands. This long awaited redevelopment of Maroochydore will essentially create the central hub of the Sunshine Coast and in turn an attractive hotspot for both work and play.

3. Birtinya Medical Precinct- Sunshine Coast Public and Private Hospitals

One of the most exciting health and medical research districts in Australia is underway on our doorstep. The Birtinya Medical Precinct will house a multi-billion dollar ‘Health Hub’ and Kawana Health Campus. Incorporated alongside this will be homes, shopping, entertainment, business, health services, tourism and jobs in the one destination.

The health hub will include both a public and private hospital plus an allied health facility and is projected to provide a $3.2b economic impact to the greater Sunshine Coast Region whilst generating more than 3000 jobs per annum during the development phase. As this region develops, the existing suburbs around this precinct and the wider community at large will undoubtedly reap the benefits.

It will take one of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken on the Sunshine Coast to see this vision become a reality. New roads, bridges, parks and services will be created on a massive scale. This opens the door to a significant economic boost and employment opportunities, while the precinct will continue to supply ongoing jobs income to the local and state economy. To investigate the Medical Precinct further simply click here.

4. $20m Big Top Market Fresh redevelopment

Central to the creation of the new Maroochydore CBD is the $20million redevelopment of the Big Top shopping centre into the Big Top Market Fresh. This redevelopment will turn this dilapidated Sunshine Coast ‘local’ into a hybrid market place.

In its current position; adjacent to the popular Sunshine Plaza and easy access from major arterial roads; Big Top Market Fresh is perfectly poised to attract the growing number of Sunshine Coast residents, large working population and increasing numbers of tourists.

The Big Top Market Fresh will be home to Woolworths, over 100 farmers market stalls on designated market days, and speciality space including supermarket, pharmacy, news agency and retail. The space will be transformed into an urban, edgy space, with a raw feel. This will also include the surrounding streets, Duporth Avenue and Ocean Street. There are several applications for bars and restaurants in the revamped space, making this space the ultimate 24/7 metropolitan location on the Sunshine Coast.

This is a truly unique experience for the Sunshine Coast and promises to breathe fresh air into the area. Please click the following link to see the buzz surrounding Big Top Market Fresh.

5. Sunshine Coast Airport Upgrade

In answer to progressive populations growth, increasing regional tourism, business and community requirements, the Sunshine Coast Airport has been approved for an expansion and upgrade.

With a booming fly-in-fly out mining employment industry came the very real need for improved aviation access to the Sunshine Coast. The proposed expansion includes a new 2,430m runway, a new passenger terminal with further retail facilities and existing public transport expansion.

This development will provide access to growing markets both domestically and internationally. It is also projected to provide approximately 5000 new jobs and over $1 billion in regional economic benefit.

This increased passenger and freight capacity will also provide stimulus to the tourism and commercial industries of the Sunshine Coast. To see the plans for the airport expansion please click here.
